ERAVIKULAM
Spanned over an extensive area of 97 sq km adjoining the crown of Western Ghats in the ranges of Idukki district. Eravikulam is one of the most significant and famous travel destinations in Kerala. The stunning park is mostly covered with consistent hill plateau. You can rejoice into scenic views of rolling slopes. In 1975 Eravikulam was coined as a wildlife sanctuary and then after three years, in 1978 it was declared as a national park for the protection of rare species of flora and fauna -Hemitragus Hylocrius and Nilgiri Tahr. The national park is sheltering innumerable species now. The highest peak here is Anamudi which 2690 m in height. The shoals, another name for forests are evergreen tropical and sub- tropical moist broadleaf forests. You can witness to the sounds of the tranquil streams of water which finally end to form tributaries to Chalakudy and Periyar rivers. You can also find Lakkom waterfalls in the vicinity. Eravikulam national park offers the core, the buffer and the tourism area, where the popular Rajamalai is considered to be the tourism area of the park. You can get an opportunity to go inside the dense forest and explore the mesmerizing beauty of the scenic environs. The park doesn’t allow any private vehicles. You can take mini bus, which are operated inside for the pollution control by the forest department. It offers a unique lot of varieties of trees and shrubs. You can get famous climax grasslands here. You can actually get a glimpse of 26 different species of animals other than Nilgiri Tahr. Apart from a number of wild elephants, you can witness langur, marten and more than 120 species of birds such as Nilgiri pipip, Nilgiri wood pigeon, black and orange flycatcher, white bellied shortwing . One can also spot Kerala laughing thrush in the national park. There is a nominal charge of INR 15/- too enter Eravikulam national park. It is located approximately 11 kms away from Munnar, to reach the park you need to hire a cab or taxi, which is comparatively more convenient than buses.
